Round trip to Kriksfjell

Hiking

Hike Details

Season: June – October (weather and snow conditions permitting)
Difficulty:
Suitable for all ages
Distance: Approximately 17 km

This 17 km circular hike takes you from Pellestova across three mountain summits – Reinsfjell, Kriksfjell and Hitfjell – before returning to the hotel. It is an excellent choice for those looking to experience several peaks in a single day without committing to the longest mountain route in the area.

The hike typically takes 4-5 hours and offers varied terrain, scenic trails and spectacular views throughout Øyerfjellet. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas over Reinsvatnet, the surrounding mountain landscape and, on clear days, all the way to Rondane and the Alvdal West Mountains.

The route begins just below Pellestova and leads past Malmtjønn before climbing towards Reinsfjell, the first summit of the day. From there, the trail continues to Kriksfjell and onwards to Hitfjell, where a picnic bench and sweeping mountain views provide the perfect spot for a break.

The return route follows the beautiful Hitdalen valley before climbing back towards Reinsfjell and reconnecting with the trail network leading to Pellestova. The combination of varied scenery, rewarding viewpoints and well-marked trails makes this one of the area’s most enjoyable full-day hikes.

From mountain lakes to panoramic peaks, this is Øyerfjellet at its finest.

Recommended Clothing & Equipment

Mountain weather can change quickly, so it is important to be prepared for conditions that may differ from those at the start of your hike.

We recommend dressing according to the three-layer principle, or at the very least carrying extra layers in your backpack. This approach helps you stay warm and comfortable while allowing you to adjust your clothing as temperatures and weather conditions change throughout the day.

The base layer should consist of wool or technical thermal underwear. The middle layer can be a fleece or down jacket for insulation, while the outer layer should be windproof and water-resistant to protect you from the elements.

If you are planning to stop for a break or enjoy a picnic outdoors, we also recommend bringing an insulated seat pad for extra comfort.
