Reinsfjell
Hiking
Hike Details
Season: May – October (weather and snow conditions permitting)
Difficulty: Suitable for all ages
Distance: 7 km return
The hike to Reinsfjell takes around one hour and rewards you with beautiful views overlooking Reinsvatnet and the surrounding mountains. On clear days, you may even spot the distant peaks of Jotunheimen, Rondane and the Alvdal West Mountains. The summit also offers several excellent spots to sit down and enjoy a well-earned coffee break.
The trail begins just behind the green road sign for Hornsjøen, near Hitvegen, and follows a scenic path past Malmtjønn before climbing towards Pellevegen. At the signposted junction for Ukstjønn, keep left. From Pellevegen, clear signs guide you onwards towards Reinsfjell and Djupslia. As you approach the summit, the trail splits into two routes, but both lead to the top, which is clearly marked with a summit sign and a traditional hikers’ mailbox.
For the return journey, you can either retrace your steps via Malmtjønn or follow Pellevegen back to Pellestova.
If you prefer a shorter hike, it is possible to park near the trailhead above Malmtjønn on Pellevegen, or start the ascent from Kriksvika.
A short climb, a big reward – mountain views stretching from Reinsvatnet to the distant peaks of Jotunheimen and Rondane.

Recommended Clothing & Equipment
Mountain weather can change quickly, so it is important to be prepared for conditions that may differ from those at the start of your hike.
We recommend dressing according to the three-layer principle, or at the very least carrying extra layers in your backpack. This approach helps you stay warm and comfortable while allowing you to adjust your clothing as temperatures and weather conditions change throughout the day.
The base layer should consist of wool or technical thermal underwear. The middle layer can be a fleece or down jacket for insulation, while the outer layer should be windproof and water-resistant to protect you from the elements.
If you are planning to stop for a break or enjoy a picnic outdoors, we also recommend bringing an insulated seat pad for extra comfort.
